Reframing Veterinary Wellbeing as a Strategic Workforce Priority
Dr Marie Holowaychuk
A skilled and resilient workforce is essential for strong animal health systems worldwide. The mandate of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) to improve animal health globally depends on the capacity, competencies and sustainability of Veterinary Services. Workforce development is therefore a strategic priority, reflected in initiatives to strengthen veterinary education, professional skills and institutional resilience.
This editorial theme will explore workforce development broadly, including strategies for capacity building, continuous learning and policy frameworks. Well-being and inclusiveness will be addressed as integral components that support retention and performance, ensuring Veterinary Services remain effective and sustainable.
Global health challenges demand Veterinary Services that are well-staffed, skilled, motivated and resilient. Workforce gaps, uneven distribution of professionals, and limited training opportunities threaten the resilience of animal health systems. Addressing these issues through structured workforce development strategies is critical for global health security.
