International Trade in animals and animal products is essential to global food security, rural livelihoods and economic development. However, trade also carries risks, including transboundary animal diseases, food safety hazards and emerging zoonoses that can cross borders rapidly.

This theme will explore the interconnected roles of standard-setting and capacity-building organisations working to bridge the gap between standards development and their implementation in countries. Articles will examine how global governance frameworks enable both developed and developing countries to participate safely and competitively in international trade. They will also illustrate how Veterinary Services have worked with private organisations to fund improvements needed to facilitate international trade. This collection will address both the technical and institutional dimensions of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) compliance, offering insights into how countries transition from compliance barriers to trade opportunities.
